I recently got a book: “Jon Burgerman. Pens Are My Friends”. Published by Idn in 2008, The book documents Jon Burgerman’s work (personal, commercial and collaborative) and work process over many years and shows how incredibly versatile and prolific Jon is.

The book comes with a strikingly beautiful A1 poster, a sketchbook and DVD.

I am drawn to artists like Jon who draw a lot and are open to making their work accessible and visible for all to enjoy and be inspired by.

I got the downloads page of my website updated with a letter set called BitSyringe. BitSyringe is a collection of letters inspired by drill bits, medical syringes and geometry. The letters maintain a stark, rigid, comical presence and yet manage to exude a hard-edged angular elegance that makes the individuality and rhythm of each letter evident despite their sameness of form. BitSyringe is a collection of contradictions and a celebration of the modification of line’s expressive value. The letters come fully customizable with ‘pods’ that can either bear colour or be left blank.Feel free to download, edit and use BitSyringe. All I require is for you to send me photos of what you produced with this font and for you to spread the word about the download. BitSyringe is not a keyable font. Each letterform or shape will need to be hand set and composed.

Visionary architect Norma Merrick Sklarek died last week, Monday, February 6th. She was a pioneer in the field.

Norma Sklarek was the first African American woman to:

  • graduate with an architecture degree from Columbia University in 1950
  • become a licensed architect in New York and California
  • be elected as a Fellow of the American Institute of Architecture (FAIA)
  • form her own firm, Siegel-Sklarek-Diamond, which grew to be the largest female architectural partnership in the country

In 2007, she was the first woman awarded the AIA Whitney M. Young, Jr. Service Award.

Her notable projects include the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, Los Angeles’ Pacific Design Center and Terminal 1 at LAX, San Francisco’s Fox Plaza, and San Bernadino, California’s City Hall.  You can see Norma speaking about her life, achievements, and experiences as a female African American architect at http://www.visionaryproject.org/sklareknorma/.

Last year, I created my first skateboard deck graphics (top image). It was for a Varsity of Community x SeekProject collaboration in aid of The Skate for Homies Foundation’s Fall Art Sale were all the boards made were auctioned. Process images for the project can be seen by clicking here.

I have never kicked and pushed before but, the ‘neverness’ has not stopped me from loving the sport of Skateboarding. I got conscious of it in the mid-nineties courtesy of ESPN’S X games. The clothes the boarders wear, the casualness of the sport, the deck artwork and the stunts the boarders pull off have never seized to fascinate me. Skateboarding in many ways has influenced the work I produce and characters on boards are a constant feature in my sketches. This project as a great way for me to connect my interest in making my drawings avccesible and visible with my interest in skateboarding.
